Paid Teaching Assistantship opportunities in Biology
Note: Ph.D. students teaching in fulfillment of their degree requirement are not hired as TAs. Please see this page for academic teaching requirements: Ph.D. Teaching Requirement
The Department of Biology regularly hires co-term students from Biology and other departments as TAs. Co-terms must have graduate billing status in order to be hired on assistantship.
TA Selection and Appointment Process
Positions are Posted
An application form that includes a list of courses with anticipated open TA slots will be available in July after Bio PhD students have been assigned to their mentored teaching experience. A notice will be sent to the Biology co-term mailing list when the application is open. The link will be posted here when it becomes available for the next academic year.
Complete the Application
An application form that includes a list of courses with anticipated open TA slots will be available here in July after Bio PhD students have been assigned to their mentored teaching experience.
As a general rule, lower division lab (40-level) or foundations course (80-level) TAs are appointed at 50% (20 hrs/week). Advanced undergraduate BIO elective courses (100-level) TAs are appointed at 25% (10 hrs/week).
Application Processing
Submit the TA application Google form. Early submissions are encouraged to increase your chances of being selected for a TAship. We strive to fill TA openings for Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters prior to the start of the academic year, although some slots are enrollment dependent so we have to wait until enrollment opens for each quarter before knowing how many TAs we will hire.
Instructor Selection
Course Instructors will review applications and may reach out directly to candidates for interviews or additional information before making their selection.
Once suitable candidates are identified, Student Services will contact the candidate to confirm interest, availability and eligibility before extending a formal offer.
Discuss TAship with Home Program
Contact the Student Services Office for your home program to confirm that you are eligible to TA a course at the percentage offered, taking into account degree requirements and other funding you might have. TA candidates must have graduate billing status before they can be hired on assistantship. International students must have language clearance from the Linguistics department prior to becoming a TA.
