Biology is a diverse and exciting field. For students with an interest in the field but not enough time to complete the major, a minor in Biology is an excellent choice for many Stanford students. Students who have taken all or part of the BioCore (BIO 41-43) will follow these requirements. Students who will take the Bio Foundations courses (BIO 81-86) will follow new requirements.
The Biology minor requires a minimum of six courses meeting the following criteria:
At least one course from the BioCore (BIO 41, 42, 43, BIOHOPK 43) must be taken. If desired, students may count two or three courses from the BioCore.
All courses, other than the Bio Core, must be at or above the 100-level, and cannot include Stanford Introductory Seminars. Acceptable courses are any BIO or BIOHOPK course numbered 100 or higher, or any course on the approved out-of-department elective list, as long as the course is at least 3 units.
All courses must be taken for a letter grade and worth 3 or more units.
Courses used to fulfill the minor may not be used to fulfill any other department’s degree requirements (minor or major).
In-department research (BIO 199 or BIOHOPK 199H) can count as 1 of the 6 required courses if taken for at least 3 units.
Courses that do NOT count toward the minor:
BioCore lab courses (BIO 45, 46, 47)
Out-of-department research (BIO 199X)
Directed reading (BIO 198, 198X)
For additional information, see the checklist of requirements for the minor.
Declaring the Minor
All Biology minor declarations must be submitted no later than two quarters prior to the conferral of the undergraduate degree.
Submit the Biology minor declaration on AXESS. As part of this declaration process, submit a list of courses planned to fulfill the minor requirements.
The department will review the request to verify it's compliance with the minor requirements.
If acceptable, the minor declaration will be approved. If changes must be made, the student will be contacted via email by the Undergraduate Staff Advisor.
Information for Students Missing 1 or 2 of the BioCore Courses
BIO 41, 42, and 43 have been discontinued and will never be offered again. Students who did not take all 3 of of the BioCore courses may take one of the new Bio Foundations courses toward their minor. Only one course from the 80-series may count toward the minor. The following courses are approved as substitutions:
- In place of BIO 41 - students may take either BIO 82 or BIO 83.
- In place of BIO 42 - students may take either BIO 84 or BIO 86.
- In place of BIO 43 - students may take either BIO 81 or BIO 85.
