Transfer Credit

Students who have completed or wish to complete Biology major requirements through external credit are encouraged to review the updated instructions regarding the transfer credit process.

It is recommended to submit transfer credit petitions prior to enrolling in or completing external credit.

Pre-Approved Transfer Credit

Students are encouraged first to review the pre-approved transfer courses lists outlined below.

Pre-approved course lists:

  1. Stanford University-wide Transfer Credit Database
    1. Approved course-to-course equivalency by the course-owning department
    2. If students submit a course-to-course equivalency and the course-owning department has denied the petition, Biology majors are encouraged to submit a Transfer Credit Evaluation petition for major review
  2. Biology pre-approved transfer courses
    1. Approved courses from the Biology department for the Biology degree requirements
    2. List is updated as new courses are approved

Visit the Registrar's Office transfer credit page for more information on how to request and different types of transfer credit.

Transfer Credit Evaluation (Department Approval)

Obtaining Department Approval

If transfer course(s) are not already approved at the university or department level, please review the following steps on credit evaluation.

Complete the Evaluation Form

Fill out the Transfer Credit Evaluation Form (fillable). One form is required per subject area (e.g. One form for all Math courses and one form for all Chemistry courses).

Provide Supporting Documents

Attach the following materials to your completed evaluation form:

  • course description (generally found in the course catalog)
  • syllabus, including a description of prerequisites,a list of readings, term papers, and/or exams
  • optional: a letter detailing why the transfer credit should be considered (1 page max). This could be helpful for the committee to learn more about your petition request.
Submit to Biology Student Services

Submit your petition through our Biology Form Submission link or in person to the Student Services Officer in Gilbert 118.

For any questions, please email Patricia at ayalamac@.

Follow Additional University Transfer Credit Steps
  1. Once you have an approved transfer credit evaluation form from the Department of Biology and have completed the course(s), students should submit their official transcript to the Registrar's Office.
  2. Once the Registrar's Office has confirmed and received your transcript, students should submit a Transfer Credit eForm.

Department Deadlines

Transfer Students

Transfer students should submit their transfer credit requests as soon as possible, even if they have not yet declared the Biology major. This will allow the Student Services Officer to have the most accurate information when relaying quarterly degree progress updates once the student has declared.

Current Students - Lower Division Courses

Students petitioning for a lower division course they have not yet taken are strongly encouraged to have the course evaluated prior to enrolling. If that is not feasible, transfer credit petitions will be accepted up to the add/drop deadline two quarters prior to a student’s intended graduation date. For example, a Spring graduate must submit their transfer credit evaluation requests no later than the add/drop deadline for Autumn quarter senior year.

Current Students - Electives

When requesting equivalency for an upper division Stanford course, the course content must be approved in advance by a department faculty member teaching comparable subject matter or by the Biology Undergraduate Studies Committee. Exceptions will not be made for upper division electives courses that were not submitted in advance.
