Adam Rutherford on "Race, Eugenics, and the History of Genetics"
Abstract: Science is a core part of the story of racism in the west, martialed and inextricably entwined as it was into the political ideology of Empire, colonialism, and the age of plunder. Today though, genetics is no ally to racists, and is a vital tool in the fight against racism. That trajectory is worth celebrating.
About the Speaker: Dr. Adam Rutherford is a geneticist and science writer. He has served on the editorial staff of Nature magazine, has written for BBC television and radio as well as the Guardian on topics related to evolution, genetics, and biology. Rutherford is an honorary Senior Research Associate at University College London, which recently issued a report and formal apology regarding its eugenic legacies. He is the author of many books, including Creation: How Science is Reinventing Life Itself, A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Human Story Retold Through Our Genes, and The Book of Humans: A Brief History of Culture, Sex, War, and the Evolution of Us. His most recent book, How to Argue With a Racist: What Our Genes Do (and Don't) Say About Human Difference, uses genetic findings to dismantle racist pseudoscience and has been met with wide acclaim.
