Please join us for a panel discussion of the film "Salt in My Soul" on Monday, January 23, 2023 from 7:00-8:30pm at Tresidder Oak West.

The film "Salt in My Soul" is based on a book published posthumously by Stanford grad Mallory Smith (class of 2014), who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 3. Mallory was a HumBio major who lived fully, mindfully, and joyfully even while she underwent repeated hospitalizations and severe medical crises. Her lungs were colonized by the worst possible superbug for a CF patient - Burkho/deria cepacia - which not only severely diminished her lung function but ruled her out for lung transplants at most medical centers.

The film is of great interest and value to students interested in medicine and the health care system. It shows with brutal honesty the realities of living with a chronic, life-threatening disease. It documents how medicine both resists and embraces novel, experimental treatments. It reveals the crucial importance of patients and their families as selfadvocates in navigating the medical system. And, importantly, it documents, celebrates, and mourns the extraordinary, all-too-brief life of Mallory Smith.

A panel consisting of Mallory's friends, teachers, and physicians at Stanford will address many of these issues and questions that arise from the audience. Members of the panel are:

  • Prof. Jim Campbell (Department of History; moderator)

  • Julia Barrero (Stanford '14, Stanford Law School '23)

  • Prof. David Cornfield (Stanford University Medical School)

  • Prof. Susan McConnell (Department of Biology)

  • Clinical Prof. Paul Mohabir MD (Stanford School of Medicine)

  • Diane Shader Smith (Mallory's mother)
